Fabulous 400

I am going to take a short little break from posting photos of readers' stoves. Don't worry, I still have quite a few of reader's stoves in queue to post.

I ran across some info. on the Tappan 400 Series stoves. Up until now, I have focused on older Tappans, but these all-in-one units are very cool and it's fun to see what features Tappan carried forward and what features changed over time.

  1. Hi there:

I don't have a Tappan but I do have a Hardwick from the 50s and I am looking high and low for someone in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area who repairs these old stoves, or at least stocks a whole bunch of parts. I apologize if this is somewhere else in your blog. Have you got any leads? Thanks!

  2. I haven't been able to locate anyone that specifically repairs old stoves in Minneapolis. I have found that if you don't lead with the info. that you have a vintage stove....ask the questions....then off handedly mention the stove it older...you will have better luck.

You might contact this place for parts. I'm not familiar with Hardwick (other than having one in my former house), so I don't know how readily available parts are. Old Appliance Club I have purchased items from them and they are very helpful.

  3. I have this exact unit shown above, Tappan 400 series debutante. The left oven temp sensor has failed and melted the wires and sensor beyond repair. Any help for parts or service in the Orlando, Fl area would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Dean

  4. Dean - There is a guy on ebay that sells Tappan 400 parts. His screen name is 54monroe. I have bought from him in the past and he has been very reasonable & responsive. I'd email him and ask him about your part. Once you have the part, it's just a matter of having an appliance person install it.

  6. I also have this stove and the oven has stopped working.

I really would like to fix it but am not sure what part I may need.
    Thanks, Adi

  7. I have a fabulous 400. It is great! I had to rewire the burners once, but after that is has been working great.

  8. Has anyone ever seen a modern version of this unit? My folks have the original but it is beyond repair and they love it - we have tried all the major manufacturers but no one seems to make something like this anymore. Any ideas?

  10. Antiqueappliances.com is the man to talk to about parts and anything to do with vintage appliances. I just got off the phone with him and he knows his stuff! He's located in GA, and an absolute treat to talk to. I have the rarer 30" Fabulous 400, and he just gave me all the background on it plus info on someone who rebuilds parts for them.

  11. I have a double oven version of the same vintage (2 ovens and 4 electric burners) on a pull out tray. Does anybody know where to locate the manual or electrical cicuit diagram for this unit. I believe that it was manufactured in 1955 and has been working perfectly until a recent intermittent problem which I am trying to diagnose.

    Thanks

  12. I have a Tappan Fabulous 400 with the pull out burners in a second home in Wisconsin. It has worked perfectly until now. The gas continues to leak out after the oven or burners are turned off. Does anyone know who might be able to fix these old ovens in the Kenosha, Wisconsin area? Thank you.

  13. I have a 1960 Tappan 400 range with double oven and pull out four electric stove elements on a metal stand with a lazy susan style cupboard. The elements burnt out on both sides of the upper double oven. The stove elements all work very well. I am looking to sell it to replace it with a modern oven. I am not sure how to find out how much it is worth and where to sell it. I am hoping to get enough to replace it? as I am a single mother and full time university student. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Much thanks. Lisa

  15. i have the 2 oven model...after using it for a couple of years we moved and the kitchen wasn't adaptable...we stored it for about 30 years...i finally remodeled the kitchen and built my own cabinets to accomodate the range....the clock has ceased to fonction, but i'll get around to fixing that soon...people who see the range are amazed at how modern it looks and of the many features it has....i have the original manual with the electrical circuit in it from 1958..if you can tell me how to mail it, i'd be happy to

    1. Does your last manual comment mean your have scanned the manual? These regular stove manual, one oven down, tell me nothing I can use. The timer went off and I think that stopped the big oven! Can't find a 400 manual on line yet, thanks for any reply

    2. I have the 2 oven model with the 4 burners that pull out. Is it possible to get a copy of the electrical circuit/manual from you? The left side of the oven isn't getting power and I am having trouble diagnosing the problem.

    3. If this manual is still available, I would love to have a copy. Please let me know how to get it. Thx!

    4. What a great find! Please let me know how I might get a copy of the electrical circuit diagram. Our 60 year old Tappan Fabulous 400 Model 442-9 just had an electrical issue after we tried to insert the right burner. Any help/ideas would be GREATLY APPRECIATED! We really want to keep this range running! We are in NE Ohio.

    5. Tom Is it still possible to make a copy of the original manual for the Tappan 400. If you could list it on e-bay I would be happy to purchase same.

    6. Don, were you able to purchase a copy of te manual and electrical diaghram? I have had a problem with my left oven not working and as others have mentioned, seems to have something to do with the timer. I really want to have an appliance repair person take a look at it but without the schematic diagram it is probably pointless.
      Thank you!

  17. Hi. I have a Tappan Fabulous 400 Visualite gas stove/oven. It usually works fine but sometimes that gas burner doesn't work well. It will light but just have a low flame. And I can't turn it up. Any ideas why? One repair guy said that we can stick a small needle or wire in the holes on the burner. I think that helped when he did it. I tried yesterday and it didn't help at all. Any ideas on what I can do? Do i need to buy a new part? Thanks!

  23. I have a Fabulous "400" electric, 30" model EV 4301. Im hoping to find an oven thermostat. Ours still kind of functions, but we have to hang an oven thermometer in the oven to monitor the temperature. Recently had to replace the lower (bake) element which I got on eBay. I do have the original "A guide to the care and use of your new Tappan". About half the 42 page booklet is charts & recipes. The cover is pink - I don't think we would see that nowadays!

I,moo king for a pair of rotisserie shaft support brackets and a meat thermometer that you insert in the meat and plug into the Tappan. Socket.

  25. Thanks but no. That's the basic thermostat for the oven. What I'm looking for is the meat thermostat that you insert in a roast and plug into the socket in the socket located in the near upper right of the large oven.

  26. Can anyone tell me how to lift the burners of a Tappan electric 400 cooking center to clean underneath? Don't have the original owner' s handbook Please? Please?

    1. If your surface burners are like many it's very easy. Just lift the edge of the burner opposite where the contact are and pull out. There's no fixed connection they just contact the electrical input by contact. Replacing them is a little trickier as you have to insert the contacts into their housings before lowering them back in place. If this isn't clear you can contact me at: 87.moran@gmail.com.

    2. Thanks, 87, but I do not see how to do that . I am attaching a picture so you can tell me exactly how to do it. I see a screw on one side but I do not know what it is for.

    3. Thanks, Carman, but I think we are talking different things. I am talking about the Tappan Fabulous 400. You refer to the individual burners, right? I was referring to the whole top cover where the four burners are. It should be easy to lift for cleaning and repair , Am I missing something?

      Delete
  27. I'm talking about the Tappan 400 Debutante which has a pull-out stainless panel on which the four burners are installed. It also has a wooden work surface which pulls out beyond the burners and can be folded down out of the way. I routinely lift each burner, pull it away from the friction contact it has with the electrical circuits and lift out the aluminum dry pans allowing me to clean underneath. My 400 has the two ovens above and two exhaust fans above the burners. I'd attach a photo but don't know how on this blog but could easily if you email me at 87.moran@gmail.com.

    1. Thanks again, Carman, yes it is thee same type of stove, but I was referring to lifting the whole panel because I need to remove one friction contact. The burner seems to be glued to it and cannot be removed. I have no idea how that happened, maybe a malfunction of some kind.

  28. We have a Tappan Fabulous 400 electric range Model #:PV4424-1 Serial #: B88255, need help to remove the glass that covers the control panel. Do you know the voltage of the "oven on light"? Any suggestion on what to look for, our rotisserie and fluorescent panel light does not work.

    Thank you,

  29. I have a Tappan Fabulous 400 from 1963. The lower oven element is no longer working and I need to replace or repair. Does anyone know what the part # is and/or where I can get the part or have someone repair the existing one? We live in the Toronto, ON area. Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  30. There's probably a break in the element which you can locate with a continuity tester. I had a short in mine so I couldn't turn it off. Depending on which oven and which element it is there are often replacements on eBay such as this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-STOVE-PARTS-Tappan-Antique-Fabulous-400-Electric-Range-Oven-BAKE-ELEMENT-/162129417559?hash=item25bfaa9557:g:Y5wAAOxydl5SLKAE. The guy who's selling this one can be helpful to you.

  31. This was our most favorite stove even though it was electric. It was sold with our house as the new owner wanted it! we are remodeling our kitchen and I would love to recreate the over the cooktop oven effect. It is so perfect. I have a frigidare 2 oven stove and really like it ~ the problem is the lower oven is just so close to the ground and I am getting too old to bend/kneel like that. Ideas please.

  32. We just bout a house that has a Tappan Fabulous 400 installed. Other needed work took priority so the Tappan stays for now. Does anyone know where I can locate an owners guide? I believe it is a 1964 model. It has two overhead ranges and the pull out range has four eyes, all in a row.
