A Southern Tappan Deluxe

Yesterday I posted photos of an early 1940's stove sent to me by Dionne. As it turns out, Dionne has two Tappan stoves.  Here is the email Dionne sent to me with the photo of his Tappan Deluxe.

One thing that caught my eye it that the previous owner said the stove was purchase in 1958. The model number on the Tappan Deluxe is TV62-28 with a (perfectly working) Robert shaw thermostat.  If you look at the burner grates, they match those of the later PHADV stoves we have seen from other readers (burner grates). The burner knobs are either replacements or a newer version for the later Deluxe stoves. This stove has a Telechron clock. It would be fun to see a Tappan stove in a custom color. The Chambers stove owners currently have a corner on the colored vintage stove market.
I also obtained a Tappan Deluxe range so now I have the 2 stoves.  The Deluxe came from a house in New Orleans where the owner stated that his parents bought the stove in 1958.  It is in great condition and I can't believe how clean it is for it's age.  I brought the burners, burner valves, and the clock to a place about 30 miles from me that restores antique stoves.  I also bought replacement knobs from them.  The place is called "Hugh's", and they have a website.  I am thinking of restoring the older one also and put it in my outdoor kitchen.  I would like to know if you have ever had experience with having an old stove reporcelained by those people who refinish bathtubs.  I spoke with someone who gave me a quote of $250.00 and guaranteed the finish for 5 years.  I am thinking of doin that to the older one, and changing the color from white to apple green or poppy red.  Maybe even thinking of purple and gold LSU colors since this is an LSU crazy town.  That would be the one for the outdoor kitchen.  I just think that I need to really coat the finish inside and out with something durable if it is going to be exposed to heavy humidity.

  1. This stove have 4 special PHADV grates. Are the back burners Contr-lo burners or is it missing it's pyro grates? At any rate, it is a beauty and a great stove to cook with.

  2. My husband is not too happy with you. :~) I started searching online to see if I could find some antique store that would take my Tappan we've had for almost 25 years (picked it up off the curb shortly after we were married), so it wouldn't end up in the scrap heap (my parents got a new stove and gave us their old one). I found your blog and this is my *exact* stove and now I want to sell my parent's old stove and restore mine!! :~D I've fallen in love with it all over again, thanks to you! If my husband can fix up the burners, which were converted to LP by previous owners, so the pilots stay lit and they work right, I'm going to keep it!

So, a "boo" from my husband, but a great big Thank You!! from me!

  3. I bought a Tappan 1950's range and cannot get the oven burner to stay lit. The gas stove burners work beautifully. I can easily, manually light the bottom oven burner, but as soon as I let go of the control dial(located on inside the right side panel) the burner goes out. I had a friend come by and we disassembled the oven control panel and cleaned the thermocouple - put everything back with no luck. Is my control switch falty or the thermocouple that needs replacing? I can't find an appliance repair person that will come near it and my only other option is to mail the entire switch and thermocouple unit to California. This will mean my stove will be out of use for several weeks. Help!

    1. I had the same problem. It finally resolved itself when we got the pilot light, and the s-l-o-w-l-y released the red button. It's been running like a champ ever since. Hope that helps. It honestly was that simple, for me at least.

  4. I have my Grandmother's old Tappan Deluxe stove. I believe it was manufactured in 1948. My Grandmother lived in the 9th ward of New Orleans and I love this stove. Seeing that Dionne got her stove in New Orleans, I was wondering if I could find out where she got her burner knobs from? She mentioned Hugh, but I couldn't find a website. I would really like to find replacements. Thanks, Paula

  5. Tappan Deluxe burner knob handles come up pretty frequently on ebay. Some or exact reproductions, some original. On the vintage knobs carefully check the description & photos for cracks in the base,
