I received the following email from Charlie. Any advice readers can offer him regarding restoring the burners would be appreciated.
"Attached are some photos of the stove.  We just purchased it off of Craigslist for $140.  The guy we bought it from put it together from 2 stoves that he got off of Craigslist - one in Ohio and one in Illinois.  Both of those had issues with dents and wear, so he used one for parts to fix the other.  He never finished getting it working though and his wife had a change of heart and decided for a more modern stove.  Now I have to get it working with no knowledge of how to go about doing it (I tried calling appliance repairmen in the area, but none knew anything about older stoves).   I'm going to start by getting the burners cleaned and as you can see, I have some parts missing on the right side burners, so I will try to figure out how to replace those.
Any advice that anyone can give to me on what to do or who to call or where to get parts, I will gladly take.
Thanks again,
Charlie"
My advice to Charlie was.....

It might be worth your while to look for complete replacement burner - it might be difficult to get a old replacement burner top that will tightly fit (i.e. no gas leaks) your existing burner. You have the "contro-lo-eat burner" in front.

You might contact this seller on Ebay:  I have purchased parts from him in the past, as have some of Tappan Talk readers and his prices have been reasonable.

This is another resource (I purchase insulation and an oven light socket from them)

  1. I have a Tappen divided top oven G8166 (TW--16)... How can I get info on year, ect?

  2. It's difficult to determine a year from just a model number. It's easier to narrow in on a year based on what the stove looks like. Do you have photos?

So now oven. Any one know where I might find springs for the door or more information on how to fix before I say good by to this gem.
One repair fellow laughed and said what ever you do--don't take the door apart.... any thoughts

  5. I just saw a very similar range to this one at an antique shop in Chicago, but with a deep well cooker. Now I just need to start the forum for O'Keefe & Merritt ranges (glad to see Tappen Talk was created).

  6. Hello,
I am so glad I found this blog! I just recently purchased a Tappan Deluxe from craigslist. Since we do not have natural gas in our home we will be converting it to propane. we were really lucky our Tappan is almost like new and we really don't need to restore it. I was trying to find the year our stove was made and looked through all your posts and pics and couldn't find one exactly like mine. According to another site it is a 1955. would love to post some pics, i see this blog has been inactive for a while. are you still interested?

    1. Kristyn, did you have any trouble with converting to propane? I'm trying to do the same thing with my recent Tappan purchase, thinking my stove is around 1948, did you do it yourselves?

    2. we had our stove converted to propane by a local fuel company (they sell oil, propane and coal) took them about a week to convert the burners and it cost about 600$ It was worth every penny, the range works beautifully!

    3. Kristyn - Thank you so much for coming back and updating your experience in converting to propane. This is a popular questions (and one I don't have any experience with)

    4. P.S. I have taken a break from posting photos. However, eventually I will get back in the swing of things and start posting again. I'd love to have pictures of your stove. I'll update my email address when I start posting again (I have a bit of a back-up of emails currently :)

    5. I forgot to mention that the 600$ included them picking the stove up from my house and delivery and set up. I would love to share some pics, especially since you do not have any pictures of my model. Just let me know when you are ready.

  8. To adjust the pilots on my '42 Tappan Deluxe, do I have to remove the entire burner deck and hood to get to them?

  9. My Tappsn is model G-330 and #10561. It is 4 burners like your"s with ctr thermostated griddle. No high shelf for pie cooling, but has clock/timer, fans, night lights, and unfortunately, I haven't yet replaced the salt, sugar, and grease pots. Below is right side windowed oven with under-grill, on left is the pie safe / bread warmer / cookware stotage. As to your faq's:. Inside the grill or a door is the metal ID info usually. Mine invluded a cloth tape edged 3x5 pilot light mirror. To begin healing the heavy rust, use a new sink sponge + put white vinegar straight on the sponge + wipe. EasyOff destroys the speckle ceramic as it is caustic. But the vinegar on a sponge can and will'bring it back' the orig finish after repeated (daily) use. (Think of how after meals, first task was to oil the wood"s water glass rings to 'ersse or lift kut' their mark?). My stove came w/ our home buy many yrs ago. Then, one could call thr util vo. and ask a rep to come out + do an alpliance/new hmowner utility recalibrate. They do it free of course. My tech showed my the vinegar trick, as my mom used Eindex (which is just vinegar, bliing, and hydrogen peroxide) on a cloth. As to 'adjusting' flames, the oven"s rigging shld hv a safety push button affair where it exits the oven/grill intersects, at the button is a screw affair to 'calibrate' it. Voila, the mirror helps you finger-find it"s back without you going head-first into any are. Never scour or chore-girl or brillo the range top's caste iron burner skeletos. Some women used to "season' them also (olive oil only if you were jewish/kosher!). But any nice clean veg oil worked. But many mom's in our neighborhood dishsoap-washed and hot water rinsed them first, then did a one-time in-oven 'season' putting oil on a lipped cookie/jellyroll pan + the burner grills facedown a half hour 'warm" (350°F). After a good papertowel wipe off, forever after that, they can be washed as any dish, even dish-washered ('hot' dry). At Walmart etc you'll find square metal reflector plates that fit atop the burner reflector rectangles. This reeeaally adds lifespan to the cheap re-chrome of today's refurbs. Or, use dollar store square aluminum foil liners made for this purpose. If chrome plates have scratches, stains, rust, etc. you can use a battery manicure kit"s buffer tip (multi-tip entire kits are $12 or so at any drug/dime store). With some elbow grease and patience, a few times a week, it'll come as new. Soaking in a soapy dishpan a"la 'Madge Palmolive' helps too. Steel wool veeery gently if u must, but test on underside for pressure on the finished look. The broiler is so nice afterward too. On your rangetop's griddle, keep the thermostst guage window clean with a toothpick. Keep oven soit off the appliance lightbulbs in-oven + at the fan vents, or bulbs will burnout sooner. Ace Hardware is best bulb store for vtgs. Our family never flour-dusted or extra-oiled any of the appliance ever, as some gals did for visual appeal. And we never cleaned chrome (as many landlords do in violation of law + health) with lighter fluid or acetone or abrasives beyond borax (natural non-caustic whiteners) and never ever ever used food color or koolaid to restore red to handle grips. As wear began we just dishsoap sponge-cleaned handles when cooled off (not when baking-hot). Not superstitiously, but for mfr's fit, we never switched out parts with other ovens. My serial no, is 10561, if other parts weren't same 'mfrs run', last digit... Hope these tips help some.
